The route (bunker → museum)
1Cabinet War Room — the plain table ringed by chairs under a wall map, where Churchill chaired 115 War Cabinet meetings as bombs fell; his chair still bears the scratch-marks of his ring.
2Map Room — the 24-hr nerve centre, frozen exactly as staff left it in 1945; the wall maps still bristle with the pinholes that tracked convoys and front lines.
3Churchill's bedroom-office — fitted with the BBC microphone he made wartime broadcasts from; the bed was rarely slept in (he preferred No. 10 above).
4Transatlantic Telephone Room — a cupboard staff thought was his private toilet, actually the SIGSALY-scrambled hotline for secret calls to President Roosevelt.
5Churchill Museum — built round a 15-metre interactive "Lifeline" table of his whole life, plus his scarlet despatch boxes, velvet siren suit, and the original black door of No. 10.
Timing
Book the earliest slot (~9:30–9:45) — busy by late morning. Allow ~2 hr with the included audioguide; do the quiet bunker rooms first, save the Museum for the end.
Coffee — before / after
Before (en route down Whitehall): Notes Coffee Roasters — top London roaster for a flat white + pastry, opens 7:30 am, ~6 min from the hotel.
After: St James's Café — glass-walled lakeside café in St James's Park (pelicans, lake views), ~4 min across the park.

HoursDaily 10:00 am–5:00 pm · free, no ticket
Optional London-leg stop — a calm pre-dinner hour near Gymkhana/Trishna (Tue Aug 4 if jet lag allows, or any spare slot).
Recommended route, highlights & café
The route (~1–1.5 hr)
1Enter Hertford House (free) — grab a floor plan; note the courtyard café for later.
2Ground floor — European Armoury: three rooms of Britain's finest arms & armour (Gothic plate, etched Renaissance suits) + a separate Oriental Armoury. ~15–20 min.
3Up the grand staircase, turn left into the Great Gallery — the showpiece room where the headline pictures cluster. ~20–25 min.
4Loop the first-floor state rooms for the Fragonard / Boucher / Watteau Rococo pictures, Sèvres porcelain and gilt furniture.
Don't miss
Frans Hals — The Laughing Cavalier (1624) — the collection's signature piece; a faintly smiling young man in an embroidered doublet, all bravura brushwork (Great Gallery).
Fragonard — The Swing (1767) — the icon of French Rococo: a girl kicking off her slipper as her lover peeks below.
European Armoury — often the surprise favourite (gleaming full plate, swords, firearms); plus Rembrandt's Titus and Velázquez's Lady with a Fan in the Great Gallery.
Café
After: The Wallace Restaurant — in the glass-roofed courtyard; coffee & café plates, or afternoon tea (~12:00–5:00 pm, last sitting ~4:00 pm, book ahead) before the ~10-min walk to dinner.

WhatNational Monument + Nelson Monument; the iconic Edinburgh skyline + sunset — low effort, high reward
Tue Aug 11 AM before the drive (the plan) — Sun eve only works if Heron gets swapped for a Fringe night. Arthur's Seat skipped.
Route, viewpoints & coffee
Once you're up (~10–15 min climb)
1National Monument — crest the Regent Rd steps beside it: 12 giant Doric columns of a half-built Parthenon ("Athens of the North"), abandoned 1829 when funds ran out — locals dubbed it "Edinburgh's Disgrace."
2Nelson Monument — the upturned-telescope tower; climb it for the 360° panorama. Its white time-ball drops at 1:00 pm with the Castle's One O'Clock Gun — an old signal to ships in Leith.
3City Observatory / Collective — cut west past the 1818 Playfair observatory, now a free contemporary-art gallery with a rooftop and a restaurant in the old domes.
4Dugald Stewart Monument — finish at the little 1831 circular temple: the iconic postcard viewpoint looking west over the Old Town spires at sunset.
Timing
Sunset is west, straight over the Old Town — be at the Dugald Stewart Monument ~20 min before. The top is exposed and windy, so bring a layer; ~20 min up top is plenty.
Coffee — before / after
After (foot of the hill): Artisan Roast — Scotland's original specialty roaster (pour-overs + pastries), ~6 min down toward Broughton St.
On the hill: the Collective gallery café in the old observatory domes — a coffee with the same skyline.
Royal Mile + Victoria St Old Town walk · downhill from the Castle · Mon Aug 10 · free WALK-IN
WhatThe Old Town spine from the Castle down — colourful Victoria St, St Giles', historic closes, Fringe street acts · ~1.5–2 hr with stops
Mon Aug 10 late morning — start at the Esplanade end of the Lawnmarket and walk downhill into lunch + Fringe. Free (only Mary King's Close is ticketed).
Walking route, highlights & snack
The route (downhill from the Castle)
1From the Esplanade into the Lawnmarket — duck into Lady Stair's Close for the Writers' Museum & Makars' Court (free; quote-paved courtyard on Burns/Scott/Stevenson).
2Dip down Victoria Street — the curved, candy-coloured terrace widely said to have inspired Diagon Alley; photo from the top of the curve, browse to West Bow.
3Back on the Mile to St Giles' Cathedral — go in for the Thistle Chapel (1911; carved oak + heraldry — find the bagpipe-playing angel). The street-performer epicentre.
4Just past St Giles, peek into Advocate's Close (framed view down to the New Town) — and The Real Mary King's Close (preserved underground street; timed tour, pre-book if you want it).
5Finish in the Grassmarket at the foot of Victoria St — pub-lined square under the Castle crag, good for lunch.
Timing
It's downhill the whole way — let gravity work. Fringe street performers cluster around St Giles' + the top of The Mound, busiest late morning to mid-afternoon. Victoria St + the closes are quietest (best photos) earlier.
Scottish lunch / snack
On Victoria St: Oink — carved hog-roast rolls with crackling (haggis-stuffing option), ~£5–7; an Edinburgh institution.
Coffee, just off the top: Hideout Cafe on Upper Bow — specialty coffee a step off the crowded Mile.

Recommended route, highlights & coffee
The route (beat the crowds)
1Honours of Scotland first (Crown Room, Royal Palace) — Britain's oldest crown jewels: the Crown of Scotland (remade 1540 for James V — Scottish gold, 22 gems, freshwater pearls), the Sceptre (a 1494 papal gift from Alexander VI) and the Sword of State (Pope Julius II, 1507). Hidden from Cromwell, then lost for 110 yrs until Sir Walter Scott prised open a locked chest and found them in 1818. Beside them: the Stone of Destiny, the coronation stone Edward I seized in 1296, returned 1996, used again at Charles III's 2023 coronation. Go straight here — the queue builds fast (~45 min).
2Great Hall (built for James IV, ~1511) — the star is its original medieval hammerbeam roof, over a wall of arms & armour.
3Royal Palace — the tiny birth chamber where Mary, Queen of Scots bore James VI (future James I of England) in 1566.
4St Margaret's Chapel — Edinburgh's oldest building (c.1130), a tiny Romanesque gem; just outside sits Mons Meg, the 1449 siege bombard that once hurled 150 kg gunstones two miles.
5Prisons of War — vaults with graffiti carved by Napoleonic-era POWs (spot the American prisoner's carved Stars & Stripes); then the National War Museum if time, and city views from the Argyle & Half-Moon batteries.
Timing
Enter at the 9:30 am opening — peak crowds are 10:30 am–1:00 pm; do the Honours straight away.
1 O'Clock Gun fires 1:00 pm Mon–Sat from Mills Mount (a tradition since 1861) — stand at the Argyle Battery ~12:45 pm. Catching it means staying till ~1:00 pm; a 9:30–11:30 am visit skips it but beats the crowds and frees the Royal Mile + Fringe.
Coffee — before / after
Before (on the walk up): The Milkman — Cockburn St, ~6 min below the castle; excellent coffee + bakes, opens early.
After (down the hill): The Edinburgh Larder for a proper Scottish brunch (award-winning coffee), or Mary's Milk Bar in the Grassmarket for handmade gelato.
