2Map Room — the 24-hr nerve centre, frozen exactly as staff left it in 1945; the wall maps still bristle with the pinholes that tracked convoys and front lines.
3Churchill's bedroom-office — fitted with the BBC microphone he made wartime broadcasts from; the bed was rarely slept in (he preferred No. 10 above).
4Transatlantic Telephone Room — a cupboard staff thought was his private toilet, actually the SIGSALY-scrambled hotline for secret calls to President Roosevelt.

2Nelson Monument — the upturned-telescope tower; climb it for the 360° panorama. Its white time-ball drops at 1:00 pm with the Castle's One O'Clock Gun — an old signal to ships in Leith.
3City Observatory / Collective — cut west past the 1818 Playfair observatory, now a free contemporary-art gallery with a rooftop and a restaurant in the old domes.
4Dugald Stewart Monument — finish at the little 1831 circular temple: the iconic postcard viewpoint looking west over the Old Town spires at sunset.
Timing
Sunset is west, straight over the Old Town — be at the Dugald Stewart Monument ~20 min before. The top is exposed and windy, so bring a layer; ~20 min up top is plenty.

1Honours of Scotland first (Crown Room, Royal Palace) — Britain's oldest crown jewels: the Crown of Scotland (remade 1540 for James V — Scottish gold, 22 gems, freshwater pearls), the Sceptre (a 1494 papal gift from Alexander VI) and the Sword of State (Pope Julius II, 1507). Hidden from Cromwell, then lost for 110 yrs until Sir Walter Scott prised open a locked chest and found them in 1818. Beside them: the Stone of Destiny, the coronation stone Edward I seized in 1296, returned 1996, used again at Charles III's 2023 coronation. Go straight here — the queue builds fast (~45 min).
2Great Hall (built for James IV, ~1511) — the star is its original medieval hammerbeam roof, over a wall of arms & armour.
3Royal Palace — the tiny birth chamber where Mary, Queen of Scots bore James VI (future James I of England) in 1566.
4St Margaret's Chapel — Edinburgh's oldest building (c.1130), a tiny Romanesque gem; just outside sits Mons Meg, the 1449 siege bombard that once hurled 150 kg gunstones two miles.
